Two youths were arrested after an off-duty officer was brutally beaten by a #gang when he intervened to stop them from stealing a #woman's phone.The incident happened when a young woman approached a gang of youths who allegedly stole her cellphone at around 8 pm at Bay Street Mall, California on Black Friday.When she asked for her phone back, the gang became aggressive and began to assault her. An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer then intervened to help the woman and the group subsequently began to violently assault him. The juveniles struck the Off-Duty officer multiple times and choked him unconscious. The off-duty officer later regained consciousness and drove himself to hospital following the attack, Emeryville Police Department told ABC7.A security guard can be seen getting knocked down in the video while trying to respond to the aggressive group.The officer, who wanted only to be identified as Greg P, said he was extremely fearful during the ordeal.He told KVTU: 'It was a melee. It was chaotic. It was a really scary situation. It should have never gotten to this point.In the video released by officials on Monday, one of the teenagers runs at the off-duty officer, who is wearing a blue denim jacket, and hits him. Another male teen is then seen punching him as he runs off until he is surrounded and one of the gang begin to hit him again. 'But I know that when I let him go, he's going to swing at me. And I let him go. I push him and sure enough, he turns around and swings at me,' Greg B explained. 'I back up and that's when one of his friends came up behind me and struck me in the back of the head.'#Greg_B said he tried to take images of the group on his cellphone, but a teenage girl with them noticed the move.The officer, a former correctional officer at San Quentin Prison, said: 'I was exhausted afterward and mentally exhausted,' he said. His girlfriend later told mall security that he was an off-duty officer as they tried to assist him. 'There was a lot of restraint that had to be practiced. And I had to do my best to stay in the moment' he recalled.The officer sustained a concussion, a broken finger and bruises as a result of the incident. 'I think this just came down to me not being able to look away and let this happen,' he said. 'I saw this young lady and she was going to be in a very bad situation.'He claimed it was the third time he had tried to help someone who was in danger in the area. Police officers, who were on duty and near an Apple store, also responded to the attack which occurred in front of the AMC movie theater at the shopping mall. Emeryville Police Department officers later arrived and detained several juveniles.
